In the pork industry pigs are treated like commodities. They are confined, forcibly impregnated, have their babies taken away, have their teeth, tails and testicles cut off without anaesthetic, weak piglets are killed by being smashed on the ground, and all of them end up being packed onto trucks and taken to a slaughterhouse where they’re stunned, electrocuted or lowered into gas chambers then are stabbed in the throat. This is all legal, standard practice in farms and slaughterhouses. Reduced to numbers, the pigs are seen merely as “stock” to be bred, used, killed and eaten. In reality pigs are beautiful, living, feeling beings. They are individuals with personalities. They feel pleasure, joy, and excitement as well as pain, fear and grief. At sanctuaries their sentience and individuality is recognised. They are treated with the same love and care that we grant our beloved cats and dogs. They receive medical attention, healthy food, a soft place to sleep, mud puddles and paddling pools to swim in, friends to play with, snacks to share, and exciting places to explore. They get to breathe fresh air, root in the dirt and feel the sun. They are loved and protected. Don’t you agree that this is what they deserve? It’s up to you which of these scenarios is the reality for pigs. Our food choices can mean the difference between heaven and hell for pigs. Stop paying for them to be abused and killed by going vegan. Then get active to help create a world where all pigs and other farmed animals are treated with the compassion that they deserve.
